There is nothing whatever romantic about disease, poverty, and deprivation or about the plight of the actual victims of these plagues. We have a responsibility to identify the rampant injustice that spawns such sinfulness and to stand with those who suffer its ravages. To refuse to be involved with the needy or with systemic injustice is a particularly shameful kind of selfishness, practiced by many who would like to be considered informed liberals.
